I have set up the SEE Library https://seelibrary.org/ with books “written by, with, and for children.” Reading and writing are two sides of the same coin. To excel in reading, one has to also excel in writing.
Writing digital books also has many benefits because it:
- Develops different types of literacy: Writing and Reading, Digital, Media, Cultural, Emotional, Discipline-based
- Captures a moment of time and place that can be reflected upon later in life
- Develops critical 21st-century skills – critical and creative thinking, communication
- Immerses writers as creators rather than users of technology
Many digital applications can be used to create books. Bookcreator (https://bookcreator.com), for example, is a free software that is very easy to learn.
Sharing books through a library such as the SEE Library:
- Creates a purpose for writing
- Builds confidence and self-esteem
- Seeds entrepreneurial skills
- Empowers writer through knowledge sharing
- Informs readers through new knowledge and understanding
- Does not cost anything
In the SEE Library, digital library books can be shared through Creative Commons Licencing, meaning they will always remain the authors’ property.
We hope that, over time, we can download and share the books in schools where children do not have access to books.
If you want to write and/or share books, please email Associate Professor Vinesh Chandra (v.chandra@qut.edu.au).
